Things to do

Roatan offers a wide variety of possibilities. You can do as little or as much as you want. You can explore the island, following the history of the pirates and buccaneers, who lived on Roatan, in Port Royal, in the early 1600’s, or visit the local communities, as Jonesville (home of the famous ‘Hole in the wall’ bar), Punta Gorda (the first Garifuna settlement on the island, established in 1797), or West Bay (a breathtaking beach).

Diving on Roatan

Diving, snorkelling

Housing the world’s second largest barrier reef in front of the door step, Roatan is a snorkelling and scuba diving paradise. Caves, thousand-foot walls, wrecks, dolphins, sharks and whale sharks during the season, offer the most desirable diving. Being only 10 minutes drive from West End, where many good dive shops are located, Cala Pelicanos is ideally located. Deep water swimming and snorkelling is right in our back yard. For a list of dive shops, see www.roatanet.com/listing/roatan-diving.php.

Beach of Roatan

Beaches

Roatan has beautiful beaches, of which the ones at Sandy Bay (where Cala Pelicanos is located) and West Bay are excellent. At Cala Pelicanos you have your own beach. You walk from the terrace through the tropical garden, to our palappa, overlooking the sea, the beach and beautiful sunsets. Other possibilities are Camp Bay, at the east end of the island, a deserted beach, so bring your own food & drink for a very special picnic, West Bay beach (a busy and lively, long, deep beach) or Palmetto Point.

Above The Beach

Glass bottom boat

There are 2 air-conditioned, glass-bottom boats, which will take you on a tour of the coral reef, the ‘Underwater Paradise’ is located at Half Moon Cabins at Half Moon Bay east of West End. The ‘Coral Reef Explorer’ operates from West Bay beach.

Horseback Riding

There are a number of places that offer great horseback riding, very near Cala Pelicanos. You have the choice to ride into the hills or along the beautiful beach.

A botanical garden

Canopy tours

Four canopy rides are at this moment available on Roatan. One off the Palmetto Road, from French Harbour to Palmetto, one off the road from West End to West Bay, one at Gumbalimba Park (which offers a wide variety of attractions, as monkeys, parrots, a restaurant, horseback riding, botanical gardens, etc.), and one off the road from Coxen Hole to Sandy Bay. Take a ride through the treetops with breathtaking views.

Dolphin

Dolphin experiences

The ‘Anthony’s Key Resort’, 5 minutes drive from Cala Pelicanos, has a dolphin program since many years. Trained dolphins perform daily shows, and the dolphin encounters, you can book with Antony’s Key Resort, offer you the chance to wade into the water and play with the dolphins. The Dolphin Swim and Dolphin Dive offer an even more intimate experience with these lovely, intriguing marine mammals.

An iguana in a tree

Iguana Farm

The owner of this unique attraction has spent many years protecting and raising these rare green iguana’s, that live in the trees around his house in French Key, just east of French Harbour. It is a bit out of the way, but quite a sight, when dozens of iguana’s descent the trees, when the owners drop vegetables on the driveway. Iguana Farm has also tarpon of their dock.

Fishing

There are a number of fishing operators, who know where the barracuda, wahoo, dorado, tuna or – if you are lucky – marlin, can be caught. Not yet very popular, but excellent, is the bone fishing.

Seaplane adventure
